Microsoft in the clouds

October 28th, 2008 posted by wisequeen

Microsoft shares rose 4% today on the back of an announcement that Microsoft will no longer provide software for PC users to purchase and download as an operating system on their  computers such as office and excell.

Instead what Microsoft has decided to do is have this software on the internet in the  cloud so to speak. Meaning that just like Facebook, Flicker , Yahoo, Google and others who have their software  on the internet available to be utilised by anyone who joins up.

This is not ground breaking tech of course, but marks a shift in Microsoft thinking to Azure, the blue sky above.

It remains to be seen how this will work in practice.
